In Loving Memory of our dear sweet Dad, Denis William O’Donoghue. He served in the Navy on HMS Carron during the war and as kids growing up we often had holidays in Selsey Bill in Sussex and no holiday was complete without a visit to the RNLI station there! My dad Bert loved the sea and we spent many happy family holidays in Wells-Next-The-Sea and it was here that we spent the last holiday together before he became ill. My daughter Joanne (or Jo as she preferred) tragically drowned whilst in New Zealand in 2019. Her name is on the first Launch a Memory in Invergordon. My mum sadly passed away in June 2021 aged 91 and when I saw the RNLI Wells Launch a Memory, I knew that I had to re-unite them on the same lifeboat. Happy Memories.

Lisa, I think I can sum you up with one word – “impact.”  You never left a scene unaltered, never left a soul untouched – you were one of life’s catalysts.  You added joy and life to any social event and could start a party in an empty room! Your letters are the stuff of legend and were gold dust in the barren sandy deserts that are modern emails, texts and social media.  They were a source of joy to all that received them and you are a lesson to us all in the art of loving communication.

NORMAN THOMAS BRIGDEN 1921 - 2020

This is for our Dad who was brought up by the seaside in Sheerness, Kent. He defended his country at sea in the Royal Navy and risked his life in the Arctic Convoys. He then continued as a civilian working for the Admiralty in Bath until he retired. He loved sea fishing and was always reassured by the presence of the RNLI to help out in times of trouble.

Our beloved cousin, Prue - a true one-off: ballet dancer, nanny, waitress, motor-cyclist and special constable; she was involved for many years with aircraft "black boxes," and life-long lover of Edward Bear, as well as her dear Tigger. She requested a donation to the RNLI instead of flowers at her funeral: what better way than to put her name on a lifeboat, for her to go to sea saving lives every time that lifeboat launches?

I did not know George, but he was in the Merchant Navy, and he and his wife Barbara, my next-door neighbour, were dedicated supporters and fund-raisers for the RNLI in Alton, Hampshire, for many years. I know they would love the idea of their names being on a lifeboat.

In loving memory of my dear dad, Captain William Joseph Kane 26/03/41 - 06/08/21. Dad went to sea from the age of 15 following in the footsteps of his father & ancestors who were all seafaring folk. Dad went on to be a Sea Captain in the merchant navy at the young age of 26. He ended his naval career as a Belfast Harbour Pilot. Bryan Stoner

Bryan and Peter met at an interview in 1961 for medical school and have remained friends ever since, Bryan being Peter’s best man in 1967. As a GP in Minehead he was volunteer crew on their lifeboat and they will take his ashes to sea. Photo of Andrew Proctor and Bryan, on the RHS at one of our many reunions. Andrew has been remembered on the boat too. They shared a room together in a flat as medical students, died the same weekend and now they will be together on the Wells lifeboat.

Barney Brogan

Barney Brogan, a former Bristol Channel tug captain, disappeared without trace off the Greek coast while sailing single handed in Sept 2021 aged 44. He set out from Almeria in Spain bound for Varna on the Black Sea via Mallorca, Sardinia and Sicily. The last communication reported good weather and no problems with the yacht. There was no Mayday call so whatever happened must have been sudden and unforeseen, probably we will never know. Sailing on a sparkling sea Barnes forever young.

Kyle McCants

Kyle, not a single day goes by when I don't remember your cheeky smile, your empathetic way of helping people struggling to find their way, or your famously warm hugs. We still shoot tequila for you, we still do "noses not deciding", we still save that one last bite at every meal, in honour of the way you savoured it. Victor Wilson

VICTOR WILSON Born 1887 Died 1916 Killed in Action WW1 Royal Navy Leading Signalman. He was the son of a Coastguard Richard and Mary Wilson, of 15, Gratwicke Terrace, South Marsh, Arundel, Sussex. All 4 sons joined the Royal Navy but only Victor was killed in action. My father was given the middle name of Victor. Victor served on HMS Fortune, an 'Acasta Class' destroyer in the 4th Division of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland. She was under the command of Frank Goodrich Terry.

Gareth Ernest Hopkin September 1946-2021

I chose to put Gareth's name on this life boat as he was a volunteer boatman in Sumner, New Zealand. He attended Naval College at the age of 13 in London, but didn't go in the Navy. In his late 50's he had his own boat and also used to go collect boats for others and sail them down the coast to their new moorings. He missed going sailing when he had to sell his own boat. We know he would be pleased with this dedication, and smiling down on us. A much missed only Brother.

Alan's dad, Grandad Bill served in the Royal Navy and the sea was always in his heart. It's lovely to think that their names will support and protect the lives of those aboard.

Simon was always drawn to the sea. He respected it's strength and magjesty. No holiday was a holiday unless it involved being in the sea be it diving, jet skis or just snorkeling. He never was sea sick regardless of how high the waves were, "the rougher the better". He would be most proud and honoured to have his name on the new lifeboat. It gives me great solace to think he will go in name on many a journey and still be helping others along with the brave crew.

Christian William Ackerley - our mate

Our dad and grandad loved the sea. From sailing on the Blue Funnel line from Liverpool as a young boy of 16 to retiring by the water in West Kirby. We will always remember his tales of travelling the world with great love. He would be overjoyed to know his adventures will continue on the waves with the crews of the new life boat. Raymond Cheng

Remembering Raymond, for his love of the sea and of helping others. Raymond died in a kite surfing accident in 2019 and received assistance from the RNLI at the scene. He was a firefighter for 16 years with a specialist water rescue role. Having Raymond's name on the new lifeboat is a very meaningful way to honour his memory and celebrate his strength, resilience, bravery and unflinching readiness to help others. Our children, Rosie and Theo, are proud to have their Dad's name on the lifeboat.

Patricia passed away at the beginning of March 2022. She lived by the sea for most of her life and always loved being in, on and beside the water - a love she passed on to her two sons. She was a life-long admirer of the RNLI and their wonderful work saving lives at sea. In 1918 our Great Uncle William joined up and like so many made the ultimate sacrifice, his final resting place is in France close to where he fell. He died 3 months before the end of the war, never reaching his 18th Birthday. We know very little of his short life other than he was a much loved son and brother whose loss caused a deep and everlasting grief. Remembering a young man who can now ride the waves with the crew.

Terence Wagg and Malcolm Shaw

My brother Terry, was on holiday with 2 friends, in August of 1963, at Wells on Sea. Terry got into difficulty, and Malcolm (Jake) gave his all, trying to hold on to him, before he was swept away. Terry was 21 at the time, and I was 10. His body was recovered some days later, by, I presume, the Wells Lifeboat. I struggle to remember him now, as I was so young, but he was a wonderful son and brother, and my parents were devastated. Ever since I have done as much as possible to support the RNLI.
