Captain Norma Clarke OBE

In fondest memory of one of the most inspiring men I ever knew - I am biased! He served throughout the 2nd World War on oil tankers across the North Atlantic and up into the Soviet waters. He was the last ship out of Abbadan in 1951 and got chased by the Persian Navy but got his cargo and crew to Australia; he retired twice and still went back to sea! he was a quietly spoken, humorous Yorkshireman and I loved him dearly

'Curly' Pat Fitzmaurice, my dad

My dad was a dad to three girls and grandad to 4 girls, we spent many happy days at the seaside throughout our childhood. Although he couldn't swim he encouraged his girls to be fearless and enjoy the incredible experiences life had to offer. Dad crossed the Irish sea to a new life in England when he was 17 years old and remained here until he died at 81 years of age when he made the final journey 'back home'.

I dedicate this to the memory of my dear husband Ray who I was married to for 52 years. He passed away very suddenly in 2021 a year after we moved to Lowestoft. We holidayed several times in Wells-Next-the-sea and love East Anglia. Rays father was a regular Petty Officer in the RN during WW2 and served throughout, he was a survivor 3 times. Ray loved the Sea all his life and would be proud to know his name will go on your lifeboat as he greatly admired the bravery of all who volunteer

In memory of Michael Peel, an Anglican priest for 53 years, who died in May 2014 aged 82. We love the idea that he’ll now be able to 'save souls at sea' via the new Wells lifeboat. Still much missed by all the family - Daloni, Andrew, Robert, Helen, Sally, Emma and Matthew.

Joan and Alan embraced life in Wells. Many happy memories were made in boats and on the beach. Swimming, sailing, water skiing, yachting, kayaking, pottering around the creakes, they loved it all.

My hero, My grandad, was a captain for Shell in the merchant navy. After he retired, he became the former honorary secretary of Redcar lifeboat station, the modern-day equivalent to the launch operations manager. I always remember his vital role as a small child. When the coastguard called my grandad to launch the lifeboat, he would be the one to get the crew assembled and ready for launch. My grandad passed away in 1986. When I discovered the Wells launch, a memory I had to include my Grandad

Mr Philip John Le Mercier

This dedication is for our father/father in law. He was born on Jersey and was surrounded by the sea. He joined the Royal Navy and was a signalman on HMS Theseus and Kilmacolm. He loved his service in the Royal Navy and always had a lot of tales to tell. He became a policeman after WW2 and became a very popular, well known village bobby. Fortunately he moved with my mother from Berkshire in 1991 to Hunstanton and was back to the coast again. We lost him in October 2020 age 95 and miss him

Mum's favourite cause to raise money for was the RNLI. As a Publican there was always a collection tin on the bar and she was proud to say that her fondness for this cause was passed down from her Mum who also raised funds constantly for RNLI. Mum died suddenly in 2014 from stage 4 breast cancer but she would be beaming with pride at her name being on the side of a lifeboat. What a fitting tribute to my beautiful Mum.

When he died in 1998 my mother has since kept up the tradition each Christmas. She is 95 now so in the future I will carry on the tradition. I found out 20years ago that a relative on ours on the Isle of Man was, what was called then a 'Rocket Man' many many years ago, before the RNLI were in Peel. So saving lives has been part of our family I am glad to say.

The wonderful James Pattison was diagnosed with a devastating illness in 2021 which will ultimately kill him. But, for now, he is living the best life he can and has every hope of attending the launch of the boat which carries his name. When The ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’ is launched, and is saving lives in the waters around Wells, she will carry an extra crew member in the spirit of James, helping to bring folk safely home.

My father-in-law John William Loftus senior was captain of a ship with Coastlines sailing out of Liverpool and during the Atlantic run in the last world war, he was torpedoed but rescued to sail another day. My husband (his son) followed him into the Merchant Navy as third engineer with Ellerman Papiany Lines also sailing out of Liverpool and his comment about the RNLI was continually that 'when at sea you never knew when you would have to rely on their help. My Dad loved being by the sea especially Cornwall as his Grandfather was Cornish . We always visited the Lifeboat Station at St Ives when on holiday . My Dad served in the Royal Marines from 1940-45 in active service and he talked fondly of his time -(although very dangerous)at sea on battleships and his training at Exmouth . I wanted some way to remember him and when I saw the RNLI page for dedicating a lifeboat by donation I thought this was perfect for him . He would have loved it .

When he came ashore he became a shipping agent and then continuing working on the Docks until he retired. Dad was involved with water his whole life, he joined a Sub Aqua Club in his younger years and was very soon teaching others, as a marine Engineer he ran his own business up here on the North coast of NI and many of the slipways, mooring etc where laid and maintained by him and his business partner Colin for forty years. A font of all knowledge and a friend to everyone. He named his own boat after our late mother and it was his pride and joy. He shared his funeral with HRH Duke of Edinburgh. S x

John loved coming to Wells and loved the sea too. He used to come regularly in his retirement showing his much loved classic car at the Holkham Show. John loved the sea and it is appropriate his name will appear on the new lifeboat as he did his national service in the Marine Craft Unit of the RAF, often working alongside lifeboats on the south coast, from his base in Newhaven Fair winds and fallowing seas

Aidan was a beautiful young boy. (My grandson) With a tender heart, he was really cheeky and I always thought there was something special about him from the Day he was born. 2x Great Grandfather, Edinburgh born, Bentlem Douglas 1825-1866. Aged 13 in Newgate Prison a/w Old Bailey Trial. Imprisoned Hulk Ships, Juvenile Prison Parkhurst, transported Jun 1843 Hobart, VDL, Freed Jan 1845, 7 yrs served. “Victorian Justice the Criminal here!”. London 1850, a Merchant Seaman, married Hannah Elliot in Bethnal Green. By 1853 settled in Liverpool, had 5 children, working as Rigger on Tall Ships, sadly dying at 40. Full of Respect and Proud having his name on RNLI Lifeboat, RIP

John Speers ‘Lost at Sea’

Proud to honour Memory of Great-Uncle on RNLI Lifeboat. Mercantile Seaman, Donkeyman, John Speers 38, with all 17 crew lost, 3 Feb 1918 when SS Lofoten sunk by German Sub UB-38, 7 miles off Devon Coast. Terrible time for Speers, as his brother, James Speers 54, died 26 Feb 1918 of Spanish Flu, followed by brother, William Speers 42, who died 26 Mar 1918 due kidney problems. With nephew, Samuel Speers 14 buried 1 Jan 1918. Our Nan, Millie Speers was 10 when Dad, William died, and 18 when lost Mum

Douglas ‘Doug’ Haynes

My Dad served in the Royal Navy for 12 years. When he left, he ended up about as far from the sea as it’s possible to get in England, but he always said if they’d settled by the sea he would have volunteered for the RNLI. It was his favourite charity and I’m comforted by the thought that he will be setting out to sea once more.

My grandad served in the Royal Navy, from the age of 15 for 8 years, he had fond memories which stayed with him throughout his life, he was proud of being in the navy. He always supported the RNLI for the courageous work they do. He sadly passed away on 23rd December 2021, at the age of 90. We all miss him very much, and are pleased he will be remembered through this RNLI tribute.

We have made a donation in Memory of Robbie Woods who would have celebrated his 70th Birthday this May. Sadly he passed away in 2017 after a long journey with Dementia. My father had a life long love of the sea and was a very keen supporter of the RNLI joining as a Shoreline member back in the early 1970’s. He had great respect for the sea and always admired the work of those volunteers who risked their lives to save others. The RNLI was his favoured charity. Sadly, he died at the wheel of his speedboat in 1977. For myself and family, knowing that his name will be on a lifeboat is a very special way to remember my dad.

My Mom Edwina passed away two years ago today, February 6, 2020. She used to collect for the Lifeboats outside a busy supermarket in a Birmingham suburb. Sometimes people would ask why they should give to a cause located so far away (you can't get much further away from the sea than the Midlands) and she would convince them to give their spare change. I've no idea why she chose the RNLI to support, but it meant a lot to her, so I've donated in her memory and will always remember her kindness.

In loving memory of our dad Peter Heffernan who born in Dublin 25/09/1930. Peter was a Merchant Seaman from 1957 - 1959, working for P&O as a cabin steward on ships that sailed to Australia. After he died in January 2022 I found my father’s lifeboat certificate dated 1957 from his training with P&O. So we decided to donate to RNLI. Having dad’s name on the new lifeboat is a lovely tribute. We hope the new boat will save many lives.

Ena Marjorie Bell (Nee Sargent) 26/08/1931-14/12/2021

Marjorie's step Grandfather, known as Uncle Albert, was a fisherman in Grimsby. He had also taken part in the Battle of Dunkirk. Uncle Albert later died at sea. He had finished his shift, went down to his bunk and suffered a heart attack. Marjorie died in December 2021, aged 90. She had treasured a letter from Uncle Albert her whole life and maintained fond memories of Uncle Albert. Marjorie contributed generously to the RNLI throughout her whole life.

Valerie Sullivan

In honour of my lovely mum who had always supported the RNLI. She visited the RNLI charity shop in Wells in 2015 so it seemed apt that her name should be added to the lifeboat Shannon, that will be launched from Wells-next-the-Sea when complete. Valerie sadly passed away peacefully in November 2020 . She is deeply missed but is always remembered by her loving family. Forever in my heart. Susan xxx

Not sure how Alan managed for another 6 years without her as they were devoted and always together. We could not have wished for better more supportive parents, their home always a happy and safe place to return to. Lifelong RNLI supporters this is a very fitting tribute to them. Yvonne Bullen

Born today (3rd Feb) in 1936. At 17 she became engaged and birthed John under her lounge window. The relationship didn't work out and so she was raising her son with the huge stigma of son out of marriage in those early years. She moved to Grantham and met her husband John, where together they adopted Susan from a large traveling family. She wanted to cruise holiday after watching her granddaughter marry on one, this tribute is apt. Go save those you selflessly did during your life.

My grandfather served in the navy during the second world war. He remained a part of the navy until his retirement and was a proud supporter of the poppy appeal and RNLI. He loved the sea. He passed away in January 2022, aged 96. We are so incredibly proud x

James (Jim) Rood

I have found the perfect way to honour my much loved and missed Dad by having his name on the new Wells lifeboat. He was a kind and caring man who always put others before himself. He joined the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy at 15 and travelled the world. After spending 10 very happy years in South Africa, we settled on the coast in Norfolk where he spent many happy hours on his sailing dinghy. He was taken from us at 65. He would be 'chuffed to bits' knowing his name was on the Lifeboat.

Thank you RNLI – for ‘Launch a memory’ where we can celebrate the life of Sheila as was such a force of nature, strong, passionate and determined in all she did. It seems only fit-ting that she should be remembered on a lifeboat battling the odds and working to help others,it is lovely to think of Sheila’s name being remembered this way.
