My mum died in 2018, aged 94. She loved visiting Whitby - and supporting the work of the RNLI. She would be so proud of having her name on the side of the new Whitby lifeboat and we were able to go on board in March 2024 during an open weekend. Mum's name is also on the Invergordon lifeboat, the first "Launch a Memory" lifeboat.

Husband, brother, father, grandad (since passing great grandad). Loved and missed by all, taken far too soon, unexpectedly diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in Apr’19, passing away May’19. In his younger years, he was a sailing instructor, built his own boat (kept in Dover harbour). In the 80s/90s he would sail his Topper with family along Herne Bay. He would eagerly visit any RNLI station and chat to the volunteers, he himself being a volunteer at Herne Windmill until his sudden decline XxX

David loved visiting Whitby nearly all his life, it was like a second home, and he enjoyed the wonderful scenery. He appreciated the work the RNLI do in saving lives at sea so much that he left almost £180,000p in his will to the RNLI. He would have loved a boat to be dedicated in his memory, based in Whitby. This is probably not possible, so it is appropriate that his name should be added to the Whitby Lifeboat.

Roger Butterwick

Roger Butterwick was born in Whitby in 1943 the son of Clifford, a sea captain and Annie. He had a sister Ann Doreen. He lived in Whitby all his life, and ran Schofield’s Delicatessen on Skinner Street selling all kinds of things before they were available elsewhere. Later he drove Aviva buses round Whitby. A keen walker he was a member of the Ramblers and enjoyed exploring the world. He went missing in January 2003. His body was found on the shore at Saltwick Bay in March 2003. We miss him

He would be so proud to be included on this Life boat, He was a great supporter of the RNLI and generously gave to the collecting bucket every time we were in Filey. He had a saying which we made into a little poster, and still sits in the Filey boathouse crewroom. "I support the brave men, who support the brave men who catch my tea! " His ashes were taken out by the Filey Lifeboat in 2010, a very memorable day, sensitively and respectively done .

Keith Acum

9/12/1931-10/1/2023 Keith Acum was the son of Harold Acum. He went to sea as a deckhand aged 17 on the trawlers. When he was called up for National Service he joined the 17/21st Lancers. He went back to sea in 1954 as a radio operator. He joined GCHQ in 1958 which led to some postings overseas and a career that he loved. He retired in 1990. He built his own sailing boat and his hobbies included opera and Italian. He was a much loved husband, father and grandfather and is sadly missed by us all

Harold Acum

30/06/1904-01/02/1978 Harold came from a seafaring family and went to sea on trawlers on the east coast from a young age. He became a skipper in 1929 aged 25. During the second World War he served in the Norwegian Campaign and on minesweeping trawlers. In 1944 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross which was presented by King George VI at Buckingham Palace. He was a much loved husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed singing and playing the piano. He is remembered with love.

My mom was a wonderful woman. Strong in mind and spirit with a great sense of humour. She spent hours in the lifeboat shops in every resort she visited always buying pens, magnets, bookmarks and key rings! Mom holidayed in Bridlington with her sister Diana my auntie Di who we also lost to cancer. They loved watching the antics of the holiday makers from the comfort of the beach hut whilst knitting. Ron Breckon

Ron was a Whitby man who loved the sea, he joined the merchant navy as a cabin boy at the age of 15. During WW2 he served in the Royal Navy. After the war he was a fisherman who owned his own coble, WY7 “Resolution”. He volunteered as an oarsman on Whitby’s last rowing lifeboat “The Robert & Ellen Robson” his picture can be seen in Whitby’s RNLI museum. Loved and Remembered with pride by all his family.

Ted Sparrow (1926-1998), Joan Sparrow (1930-2017) & Sue Sparrow (1964-2022).

Ted & Joan were the most genuine people I have ever known. They enjoyed many voyages in and ex-RNLI lifeboat, the "Jean-Louise", owned by Veloce Motorcycle Company where Ted worked as Foreman Engineer and where he met Joan. They became proud and loving parents of Sue, my beloved who I met at school and lost suddenly on June 4th 2022 after almost 44 years together. I miss them all terribly and now they will be together at sea in spirit in a very special place. R.I.P., all my love Michael XXX

Harry Roylance

Harry Roylance 17/11/28 – 10/5/97 My Dad passed away while on holiday in Whitby. He had a keen interest in sailing ships and had built large scale models and was there to see the replica Endeavour sail in on 9th May 1997. After watching the arrival, he said it was an experience not to be missed. However, he unexpectedly collapsed and died the following morning. A name on the new lifeboat seems a fitting tribute.

A Dear Dad and Grandad. A Sussex man he was in the sea cadets before doing his apprenticeship in coach building at Lancing Railway-works. He then did his national service in R.E.M.E. Here he completed his joinery apprenticeship and continued his career building railway carriages and Southdown buses. He was a gentle man. He would be delighted to have his name on the Whitby lifeboat with his father Harry and brothers Wally and Peter Kersey.

Gordon Robert Paterson 2/2/1935-28/6/2014

Remembering a dear husband, father and grandfather. Greatly missed. At 18 he was an apprentice boatbuilder in Surrey and Sussex. Once qualified he continued to work on boats as he did his national service in the RAF and worked in Pembroke dock, Newhaven and on air sea rescue boats at Calshot. Later he worked in aircraft design including the VC10 and Concorde. A family man who loved telling a good story. He would be honoured to have his name on the Whitby Lifeboat alongside his son Clive.

Clive Gordon Paterson

A dedication of a dear son and brother, lost too soon aged 18 in 1986. He had a great sense of humour and many friends. He had plans to travel and worked for an executive travel agency in 1985. He loved the sea and it is a fitting tribute that his name can be on the RNLI boat saving those lost at sea.

Aoife Rose McAdam

Aoife means ‘beautiful’ in Irish and she was a ‘beautiful rose’. She died very suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 19, just about to enter her second year at University. She was a loyal friend to many, and spoke out about the injustices she saw around her. The RNLI represent her values - ready to rescue anyone in need of help. It is a honour to see her name on the boat and know that she will continue to show compassion and make a splash at the same time!

Peter Joyce

Our Dad loved his time as a lighthouse keeper in the ‘60s and supported the RNLI all his life. He often joked “if you don’t wear a badge, they throw you back in!” His final months were spent in Skegness and he visited the lifeboat station often. Being part of the Whitby lifeboat is a perfect tribute and we feel honoured that, in some way, he is still helping to save lives. Very much loved and missed every day.

A Lincolnshire man, much missed by his children and grandchildren. Despite his 5 years as a German P.O.W. Stan was always ready for a laugh right up until his 102nd. year.

Charles Henry Nicholls

My dear dad passed away on 17 June 2021, the day after my birthday. He was aged 95 and had lived a full and active life. Most memorably, he was appointed as a Football League referee and enjoyed many prestigious games as the "Man in the Middle", especially the match between Plymouth Argyle and Santos in 1973. His father, Fernley Edward Nicholls, who was lost on HMS Acasta during the war, is also remembered on the same lifeboat and I am delighted that their names appear together.

My paternal grandad, Fernley, was lost on 8 June 1940 on the HMS Acasta. My father, his son Charles Henry Nicholls, was aged 14 at the time and he is also dedicated on the Whitby lifeboat. I think they would have been so proud to know that their names will long be remembered.

Giles Pitman

My darling husband Giles, dad to Adam and Torey, who we lost in October 2017. He loved the sea and boats and we live just down the road from where it was built. Spent many a happy hour in the RNLI pub in Poole. He would be so pleased to know his name is on this very special life boat. We miss you so much, my darling.

Dad spent all his working life at sea, starting by training at Trinity House right up to Master Mariner on a Super Tanker. When he retired he wanted to do his bit for the RNLI, going around giving talks about their work and encouraging donations. So it is in his memory we dedication his name on the Whitby Lifeboat.

We are so grateful to the RNLI for including our ‘Sam’ on the RNLB Lois - Ivan stationed at Whitby. A loving husband, father and grandfather who sadly left us in 2020, Sam was the Home Beat Police Officer for Petts Wood in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In his spare time he loved gardening at the Homesdale Allotments in Petts Wood and also sea fishing with his friends. Sam supported the RNLI and seeing his name on the Whitby lifeboat is a lovely tribute in his memory.

Our family has historic links with Whitby. Our GG Uncle Isaac Dobson was lost in the 1861 Whitby Lifeboat Disaster and our GG Grandad, Thomas Raw, a Master Mariner from Whitby, lost his life at sea in 1875. We were delighted when Whitby was chosen for Launch a Memory as it ties together our family's seafaring history perfectly! Dad/grandad, who was in Seaham Coastguard, would be so proud to see his name on the lifeboat. He & his seagoing family will always be with you saving lives at sea 🌊💙

Alan, our much-loved husband, dad and grandad, was a long-time supporter of the RNLI, so we believe it would have meant a lot to him to be commemorated on the new Whitby lifeboat. We all have many happy memories of him and of family seaside holidays spent with him in various places around the UK. He often used to say though that the best fish and chips he ever had was in Whitby, so we think it’s fitting that he is now playing a very small part in saving lives at sea there.

My sister was a proud Yorkshire woman who loved the sea; swimming, sailing and kayaking whenever she had the opportunity. She was an active member of the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat crew at Atlantic College. When diagnosed with cancer, I promised her I would get her into the sea one last time. This proved impossible, so adding her name to the lifeboat was the next best thing. Go ahead Joanne, make a BIG SPLASH and continue to help out in the wonderful company of others. You were greatly loved. xxxx

Freddie Boy you were taken from us far too young, only 19. We were very proud of you. You loved your motorsports especially Ferrari and F1. You also loved your remote control boat which we sailed whenever we could and brought a smile to your face. In memory of my lovely, kind and devoted husband Ian, we were together for 55 years. We have supported the RNLI for many years, in various ways. We would always visit lifeboat stations on our travels and shopped regularly for Christmas cards etc. at Whitby & Redcar. Ian would love the idea of this dedication, but I can imagine that him saying wryly, with his usual dry sense of humour, that he really appreciates being launched into the North Sea on a cold winter’s night!

Paul and I had some many happy memories of our frequent trips to Whitby and we would always made a visit to see the lifeboat. Sadly Paul passed away from covid 2020. I miss him everyday 💙
