No matter where we went we always ended up in Whitby, this was our favourite place & John always called in the RNLI & always bought something in the shop! I have just spent my 3rd Christmas without him but only seems like yesterday, I miss him so much, we would have been married 45 years this year, a lifetime with the same person is an awesome achievement! They said it wouldn’t last in 1978, how very wrong were those doubters, we certainly proved them wrong John, we loved each other to the end.X

AKA Roy, Captain Constable, my father had a successful career in the merchant navy(Esso and Trinity House) and worked for the Royal Navy during the war. He was a true Yorkshire man. We made many weekend trips with my American Mother, my siblings, Mary and John to visit the coastal towns of Bridlington Scarborough and Whitby. We have fond memories of Whitby as a family. RIP mum and dad. As a keen sailor I have been gratefully rescued by the RNLI in Dungeness/Dover, now also fundraise.

Mum was a kind and generous person who loved holidays by the sea, including Whitby. She was a lifelong RNLI supporter and had her family roots in Yorkshire. She bravely fought cancer and lost the battle last year. She would love to know that she is still helping the wonderful life-saving crews of the RNLI. 2023 is a special birthday year for her and so this dedication is also her special birthday gift. In 2023 it's been 10 years since dad died. He made his life (and ours) in Staithes, a community by the sea. He taught at Caedmon School to many of the sons and daughters of the fisherfolk of Whitby, and, although not known for his seafaring antics, he threw himself into making Staithes Fishermens Choir a lifeblood of the community. He would have enjoyed having his name etched onto Whitby's new lifeboat, so his passion for caring for the people of the town can continue long into the future.

We spent every holiday by the sea in Devon. Even when mum was having treatment for cancer and in her final few weeks, she still managed to swim in the sea. The RNLI meant so much to mum - she even made sure her grandchildren were part of the Stormforce crew. Our mums final resting place is in the sea, where she was her happiest and most free. She is a true superhero and a warrior and it is fitting that her name is on the boat of other heroes. We miss you mum. Always. Be at peace now xx

My Aunt Rene (Irene) 1926 - 2012 , was just a lover of lifeboats and was in awe of the volunteers and people that were ready to risk their lives to save others and regularly donated and visited the stations whenever she could . George Kenneth Gibbs

George, known as Ken, was loved by all who knew him. He was a Yorkshire boy, merchant seaman and life-long Coventry City fan who loved the sea, Whitby and his ‘wonderful’ family. He joined the MN at 17 and enjoyed travelling the world during his 12 year career. He lived a long life full of adventure and fun. He loved his family and we loved him back. He died in April, 2022 at the age of 95 years of age. He was a legend to everyone and is greatly missed. We, his family have been truly blessed.

I never met grandpa because he died when my father was a young man. Dad dearly loved him and now they will be reunited & appear together on Whitby Lifeboat, in a place they loved, a short distance up the coast from Scarborough, where granny had ashes scattered. Grandpa served in Burma with the Royal Engineers during WW2 and before that he worked as chief architect, responsible for the many new RAF airfields that were required in Lincolnshire in the lead up to the Battle of Britain & beyond. xx

Terence McCullough

My Granda, Terence McCullough, worked as a ship builder at Swan Hunters shipyard on the Tyne. Of the many ships he helped to build, the most famous was the HMS Ark Royal. Alongside my Nana, he used to take my Mam and Uncle on holidays to Whitby when they were younger. My Granda unfortunately passed away in the summer of this year (2022) and I think it is so poignant that he can be remembered through the building of a new boat that will have a similar legacy that HMS Ark Royal did.

Norman Dunkerley

To my beloved father, Norman Dunkerley who was Whitby Town Treasurer from 1930 to 1960, and devoted himself to the town where I was born in 1933. He was immensely proud of the lifeboat, especially of the Rohilla rescue. A soldier in the Manchesters in WW1, he joined the Whitby ARP in WWII, and threw himself into war work, earning the MBE in recognition for his fund-raising efforts with Mary Churchill. He was a keen golfer at Whitby golf club, and is pictured with one of his trophies.

My husband Darren passed away last year shortly after his 50th birthday. He had loved whitby from being a child and holidaying there with his family. When he took me for the first time I instantly fell in love. We spent our honeymoon in whitby in 2017 and visited every few months including New Year. We would often visit the life boat station and take trips on the old life boat sea and river trips. He would be so proud to have his name on the newest addition life saving boat.

I always remember as a child visiting all the lifeboat stations in North Wales and other places. To have their names on the Whitby lifeboat seemed a fitting thing to do in their memory. We used to spend time in Whitby.

Dr William Gregory McCutcheon

My father started visiting the area in 1929 and continued annual family visits until 1939 for obvious reasons. He and his family usually stayed in Runs'ick Bay. After the war he married and continued visiting Runs'ick and surrounding area. He made many friends was passionate about the RNLI and also the fishing industry in Whitby. My mother later became President if the Morley Ladies Lifeboat Guild and was awarded the Silver Medal for her fundraising.

Sarah Hodgson

Sarah was President of the Morley (West Yorkshire) Ladies Lifeboat Guild and her efforts were rewarded with a Silver Medal and Commendation for the money she helped to raise. Sarah passed in 1998 and my mother Moira McCutcheon took over her role and was also awarded the Silver Medal for her efforts in raising money for the RNLI.
