George Lewis McDowall
On 8/6/1892 George, from Poole, Dorset, then serving on the barque Arethusa, selflessly, voluntarily, and courageously, helped to rescue the crew of the Africa, in mountainous seas off the Cape of Good Hope. Without doubt he risked his life to save others. The Africa sank with no loss of life. George and his crewmates then showed great kindness to the shipwrecked seamen, giving up rations and comfort, as they carried on their voyage to land them safely in Australia. We salute your bravery George
