In memory of our brother-in-law Gordon who passed away suddenly in February this year aged 54. Honouring his name on the Whitby lifeboat is a fitting tribute to Gordon who loved sailing and worked/volunteered with various rescue services. He was a team player and loved meeting people. For 10 years he was a member of the US National Ski Patrol and before that a member of his local Fire Dept and Ambulance Squad. He would be proud to have his name alongside the Whitby Crew saving lives at sea.

James Buchanan

1/2/1864 – 15/3/1898: Liverpool Echo, May 16th, 1898. The Benholm and the Klondike collided. Nine crew of the Benholm (Garston to Cardiff), including James Buchanan, donkeyman, were lost 12 miles west of Point Lynas, only 3 miles from Anglesey. The Klondike did not stop but the Curzon picked up survivors. James was my great-grandfather and left behind a wife and 5 children. My grandfather and a sister were brought up in the Seaman’s Orphanage, Liverpool. May his soul rest in peace.

Barbara Elliott unexpectedly passed away in November 2021; deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a kind and compassionate soul and loved Whitby. She always said it was her favourite place to visit, often popping over on the bus from “Boro” with her sister or going with her son and grandkids. So, the chance to add her name to the new Whitby lifeboat seemed like such a wonderful thing to do, to honour her memory and the good work of the RNLI. Thank you, RNLI. Gordon Lambert

This is in memory of our young brother, Gordon. He died in 1984, aged just 18. He was swimming with his best friend in Loch Lomond when his friend got into trouble quite a distance from shore. Gordon managed to rescue him, but sadly drowned as rescuers were helping his friend onto a boat. With this donation I feel that he will still be out there helping to rescue anybody who is in trouble.

When we were little, we lived in Warwickshire. Dad loved to see the stormy waves and often we’d pile into the car and drive to Whitby to see the waves, have chips for tea and then drive home. They both loved Whitby and supported the RNLI and there are so many beautiful memories of family holidays in the area. We’ve lost them both now but they’d love to know they’ll be part of the lifeboat for many years.

The RNLI has played such a big part in Ron,s life. His Dad Sydney was a crew member of the lifeboat in Barry South Wales he then went on to be the engineer for the South coast making sure the lifeboats were in good working order. One of Ron's favourite memories as a child was being on board a lifeboat as it was launched during a test run. Sadly Ron passed away in Dec 2021 I miss him every day as do all the Family. Nicky was a Yorkshire boy born and bred just down the coast from Whitby, at Bridlington. Nicky would often take his young son for walks along the seafront and to the lifeboat station. His many friends and family are proud that the Whitby boat will carry Nickys name whilst helping people in need of assistance. Nicky too, would also be proud that the donation made to the RNLI will contribute towards funding the continuing service given by all the volunteers.

BillBailey/Barnacle Bill. The sea was Dads life from Sea Cadets, joining Eagle Oil aged 16yrs to becoming a Master Mariner at 29yrs old. Young in those days! Left deep sea to become a Trinity House Pilot in Falmouth and then later on Milford Haven. In retirement , his yacht was his passion…and his new sails were always made in Whitby. Reunited with my Mum in August 2016, when both their ashes were scattered ..at sea

Howard and I went to Whitby as often as we could. Howard went on many day fishing trips with a group of friends and on one occasion they had the catch of the season! I went to school in Whitby for a few years. It was always our "favourite" day out and it is a place you never tire of. My incredible dad, Gary Pennington sadly missed by all of his family and those close to him. Gary’s main hobby was fishing, in which he had his own fishing boat. He would contribute monthly to RNLI knowing how important it was to those who use the waters on a regular basis. Over £1000 was raised in a gofundme in memory. Mum lived in Scarborough and loved to support the lifeboat, when she retired after 30 yrs as a Nurse, she volunteered in the Scarborough Lifeboat Station gift shop. When Mum passed away in March 2005, Scarborough crew launched the Offshore Boat and scattered her ashes in the South bay. That was an incredible gesture and we know Mum would have been blown away! Thank you to every RNLI volunteer for everything you do.

Tony was a friend and HGV driver, who helped my gain my HGV licence. Many years ago he used to transport lifeboats for the RNLI all over the country. Sadly he recently died of lung cancer. He requested donations, rather thanflowers at his funeral, for the RNLI. He would be proud to know his name will sail out to help others. RIP Tony.

My dad- Ernest David Robert Cherry ( Ernie)

My dad was in the Merchant Navy and left before my brother and I were born but we were brought up with photos and stories of his times at sea travelling the world. Dad always supported the RNLI and Christmas was always about having cards from them or holidays would be looking at the lifeboats when at the coast. Sadly, dad died in 2002 and I miss him so much but the RNLI always brings back happy memories and it will be an honour to have my dads name on the lifeboat.

Dad was a Baker, Business Owner, Engineer, Inventor and a wonderful Husband/Dad/Grandad/Great Grandad who loved to sail in the Humber, North Sea and beyond with his wife Jennifer by his side. He sadly passed away in Feb 2023 at 91 yrs old, leaving a huge hole we’ll all never be able to fill but we know where he’ll be…Upon the sea. Go sound, go safe, goodnight, god bless. On the 13th April 2001 my amazing father was diving in Eastbourne and suffered ‘the bends’. The RNLI responded and tried to help, but tragically he died. Whilst they could not save him, I am grateful they tried. I have never got over this loss, I have just learned to live with it. I am so please to honour his memory with his name on a lifeboat in Yorkshire as this is where he was born. This photo was taken on the boat just before he did his last dive. Gone but never forgotten. Love you Dad. RIP.

Our dad was an auxiliary coastguard for many years in Flamborough. Did cliff rescue and lookout/radio. So the lifeboat and coastguard services where so special to him and us as we grew up in the village. So seemed fitting for his name to be remembered on a lifeboat and Whitby is not too far from home.

Now our hero gets to stay close to the hero’s of the RNLI Whitby crew.
