He was proud of his service in the Royal Navy and latterly taking part in the Royal British Legions Ride of Respect. He loved the sea and spent many hours sailing the Solent. He qualified as a Search Dog in 2015 and served until his retirement in December 2022 attending over 100 searches. Our father John, from Montrose, Scotland was a lifetime supporter of the RNLI. The Watt family have a very long association with the sea.  Generations of fishermen, then ship engineers. Our Great Grandfather - David Watt was awarded a medal from the Norwegian King in November 1916 for rescuing the crew of the schooner Heistad which ran aground in November 1916. We have only admiration for the brave men and women of the RNLI who tackle call-outs in all weathers.

They lived their lives simply together. Dad passed away aged 92 and mum 99. Mum could never pass a lifeboat station without buying something! Lived in Topsham and Exeter and loved popping to Exmouth just to be beside the sea. They had the greatest respect for those brave men and women who manned the lifeboats and it is only fitting that their names are now on a local boat.

Captain Juam F XAVIER 1918- 1993

Juam F XAVIER, was born in Apr 1918, in the Island of Kayts in the North of Ceylon. At the outbreak of WWll, he was stationed at HMS Trincomalee as a Tug-master, undertaking numerous salvage and rescue operations in the NE approaches of Ceylon. At the end of the war, he was appointed Master of MV Sir William Mathews, bucket-dredger, tasked with harbour engineering developments in Colombo and Galle. He died of cancer in March 1993. God Speed Dad.

Joan Valerie Deen

I lost my Darling Joan to cancer that was not diagnosed till too late. Joan was a beautiful person and always smiling even with other health issues she had. We were originally from Northumberland and loved the sea. So what better way to keep her memory alive by a dedication on your boat. Exmouth will be the fifth boat I have Joan’s name on now, a great way to remember her, and help the RNLI cary out the great work they do.

Peter (Duff) Cooper

During WW2 Peter was in the Royal Navy and served on various ships. He was a leading seaman of a landing barge, and saw action in a number of campaigns, landing troops on beaches under fire. During the 1950s we spent many happy family holidays in Exmouth. We always went to see the Life Boat. Dad loved the sea, and always told us to respect it and take care.

Barry Dufour

Barry was my eldest brother. He was a wonderful person who lived his life to the full. No matter what his glass was always half full. He was a hairdresser by trade. Something he practiced from 16 until he passed away, a victim of Covid. He loved to travel but most of all he loved the sea. He even converted his car so he could stay overnight with his best mate Dave on the S. West Country coast. Barry cared about people too. He'd love the idea of his legacy being to help save lives. ;

My dad, Charlie was a farmer and loved the outdoors. My mum, Mary loved eating fish and chips by the seaside. Mum loved the sea and we've spent my whole childhood on the water, sailing around the North Wales coast. I've carried this sea life on too and continue to love and respect the sea. Mum's favourite view was looking over Beer Bay, when staying with dear friends who live in Beer. I decided to add mum's name to Exmouth lifeboat so she could see Beer Bay whenever the lifeboat is there. I added Dad's name too so she is not alone. He turned 90 this year, but it's not the same celebrating without mum.

Sadly our Father Bill Purves recently passed. When he was called up for National Service. He chose to join the Merchant Marine. He joined his first ship for the Willson line the Regent Panther, in Glasgow on the 4th November 1952. He never forgot his time at sea and always had a pair of ship spotting binoculars to hand at his holiday caravan in Fife. He was keen a supporter of the RNLI whither, dropping his change in the collecting tin at the local fishmonger to selling raffle tickets.
