Babs Doswell was a very fun and lively lady with a wicked sense of humour. She was well known throughout the local area for her ‘talks’ on subjects as diverse as ‘Being a lady brewer’ and ‘Camping holidays which i hate’. She was also a keen supporter of the RNLI. ALFRED THOMAS CANN

Alfred was a donkeyman on the SS Gasfire which was torpedoed on 17/10/40 with the loss of 11 lives. This was the second time Esther's mam, Margaret, was widowed as a result of war, having lost her first husband in the First World War.

Keith Frederick Samuel Davis

Keith enjoyed his life to the full especially on his 7 trips on a North Sea trawler as a deck hand aged 78. Died 10th May 2022 age 81. Sadly missed.

Our Maureen was the best friend we could have had. Her life was lived giving to others. She led a charity which provided safe water to communities in Zambia, also supporting two schools, health clinics and a skills centre there. She was an active support in her village, shopping for people in lockdown and leading the singing in the village group. She was a midwife and her colleagues and patients loved her. So did we, so very much.

My wonderful Dad was a big supporter of the RNLI and Crail was just second home. What a fitting tribute to have his name commemorated on a vessel which will be used to save so many lives by such dedicated people. Miss you every day Daddy. Julie x

In his own words, continued: His log books, which were used in the film “Moby Dick”, are now in Anstruther Fisherman’s Museum. A whale’s jaw bone, which he caught, was one time over the rear wall of the family house at 32 George Street, Cellardyke…”

David Birrell CEng 1926-1997

David (on the right in the photo c1960), son of Thomas Tait Birrell (on the left), was born in Bass View, West Forth St, Cellardyke. Though the family soon moved to London for work, David spent many of his childhood holidays with his mother, father and other relatives in Anstruther and surrounding villages. He had a great fondness for this place and walked the quay many times with a bag of fish and chips from the fish bar. Some of his ashes were cast into the sea at the entrance to the harbour.

About his ancestors, in his own words: “Grandfather’s family well known for fishing skippers. Brother skippered first steam boat, fishing from Anstruther. Also last skipper of Forth Ferry was Thomas Birrell, same family. Great Grandfather William Smith was captain of the last whaler sailing out of Dundee. He fished in Smith’s Sound, Greenland… On retiring he bought the Smuggler’s Inn, west Anstruther and finished his own best customer. His log books, which were used in the film “Moby Dick”, are

Thomas Tait Birrell 1905-1997

Tom (on the left in the photo), born next door to Anstruther Fish Bar and buried in Anstruther cemetery, was a fireman and deckhand as a teenager aboard KY199 The Venus in the 1920s. He later became a police constable. Tom’s brother, David, fished out of Pittenweem for much of his life.

William Findlay Guild

Our Father survived the War and lived 'til 2010 (age 90). He joined the RNVR and served, amongst others, on HMS Tartar which was one of the Destroyers involved in the sinking of the Bismark. He would never talk about his experiences but I'm sure he encountered both loss and saving of lives. Although born in Glasgow, his Father was born in Fife, so the Anstruther life boat is an appropriate symbol for this dedication.

Our beautiful son died on the 16th July at the age of 16 after a short illness. He had Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy and after a stint in the paediatric intensive care unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital towards the end of last year with double pneumonia and was expected to die, decided he didn't want to and came home to us. We had 7 wonderful extra months with him, which we are forever grateful for. We gave our cheeky monkey a wonderful send off on the 15th August with nursery rhymes and songs

Douglas Watson Young

Doug was the middle child of Scottish parents, and the only sibling to be born in Scotland. As a tribute to him and in his his memory, it seems an appropriate gesture as he was a great supporter of the RNLI and their fantastic work. Doug spent his younger career as an Engineer in the Merchant Navy, sailing to all corners of the world on Oil tankers and he would be proud to know that his name is now associated with the Anstruther Life Boat in Fife.

My beloved husband, Alan, always loved the East Neuk, and had a respect for the RNLI and all the wonderful work they do. I have decided to have his name on the new Anstruther life boat, so that he is continuing to help, as I know he would have wished.

Served in the Royal Navy during the World War II as a Petty Officer and was involved in the D-Day Landings. A very gifted man and very much loved and missed. I think of you every day.

My dad, Jim Wallace, worked for many years at the Anstruther boatyard, now long gone, which was then adjacent to the Anstruther lifeboat station. He was a great personal friend of Peter Murray whose son served for some years as coxwain of the Anstruther lifeboat. I would be proud to have dad's name included on the new Anstruther lifeboat. Mum lost her battle with cancer on 1st September 2022. Unfortunately, she never got to visit Anstruther, but would have loved fish & chips on the front by the lifeboat station. Every time I have visited I have bought her gifts from the RNLI shop which she proudly used daily (her fold up shopping bag & her pen on the fridge.) A little part of her memory is now in a place she would have loved and with the brace volunteers from the RNLI.

Various members of the Godden family were involved in leading the Crail "CSSM" Children's Beach Mission in the 1950s, and we visited nearby places on the Fife coast, including Anstruther. Very happy memories. My parents met at Lossiemouth Beach Mission, and their first home was in Kirkcaldy. HWG.

Flt Sgt Percy Albert Beart

In memory of Flt Sgt Percy Albert Beart of 275 Sqn RAF SAR based out of RAF Leuchars. Killed when his helicopter crashed at Bell Rock Lighthouse on 15th December 1955. The 'James and Ruby Jackson' from Anstruther was one of three lifeboats launched that day to assist with the search and rescue operation. "Non interibunt - They shall not perish"

Danny Cunningham jnr

Danny would be so proud to know that we have added is name to the new lifeboat. He was a keen genealogist and in his research found that he was related to the Fisher families in St. Andrews. We were always a supporter of the Anstruther boat but makes it more special with the connection. He also has family ties to the fishing families in Anstruther. He was a proud Scotsman and represented Scotland many times playing darts all over the world. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.

A good pal, Fiona (right), met as we started Midwifery (1976) at Good Hope Hosp., Sutton Coldfield. I was asked to be her Matron of Honour when she'd moved back to West Lynton, Borders, her parents still living in Lichfield, Staffs at the time. Her mum & granny came from Kirkcaldy. Sadly she developed breast & pancreatic cancer and died in 2018 leaving husband Neil and sons Gregor & Campbell. I had to retire early as I have M.S. I've lived in New Brighton now for 21yrs - there's a lifeboat here!

I have missed my mum and my best friend for nearly 4 years now. She bravely fought cancer, yet all she could think about in her last weeks/months was how to get homeless people off the street. She left a legacy her passing raised enough money to open a Homeless Bus for people sleeping on the streets. As she loved being by the Sea and people's lives were so important to her, I couldn't pass by a memory so fitting for her life...the importance of saving lives.

My father, born and raised in East Sussex. He served his country during WW2 including the recovery of damaged tanks whilst under fire in the desert campaign. After the war he eventually moved to Edinburgh, a city he loved and died there at the age of 72.

Robert Douglas Methven

This dedication is to my father Douglas Methven, a wonderful father who survived WWII as a pilot guarding North Sea convoys in atrocious conditions. He was a wonderful caring father to myself and my brother; giving us great childhood experiences, including many in boats and swimming in storms which he enjoyed as an excellent swimmer. Born and brought up in St Andrews he loved the sea and was a lifeguard at the seawater open air pool in 30/40s. Lost too young at 55, we love and miss him still.

Your favourite place Dad was Heswall Shore and I loved spending so many precious and fun times with you there. You always admired and supported our local Hoylake and New Brighton lifeboats and new many of the lifeboat men as personal friends. You just loved old wrecks of boats that no one else wanted and gathered quite a fleet of them! Fun, crazy, happy times. Good memories. So glad I worked with you and your brothers. Dad sailed into his final sunset in November 2021 at the age of 94. Well loved and respected by all that met him on his sailing adventures around the West coast of Wales, England and Scotland, as well as his many trips across to Ireland. Our brother Hugh took a job on the fishing boats in Oban after serving his apprenticeship in Barr & Stroud. He hated working in a factory and loved the fishing life. Sadly he passed away in a fire on board the fishing vessel Aliped VIII, in Oban Harbour when he was just 28 years old in 1983. We all still miss and love Hugh very much. He would have laughed at having his name on a lifeboat.

Uncle Arthur - thank you for everything...... The day you took this young lad to Roker park circa 1968 - the die was set, a Sunderland fan forever.
