Captain Herbert Watson 1890-1964
My Grandad, born in Whitby and ran away to sea aged 14. During First World War he served as a Lieutenant on an armed Merchantman HMS Patia. He married his sweetheart, Lily Booth on 14th Feb 1917 at St Mary's Church, Whitby. He spent his whole life at sea, moving to Liverpool, where he worked for Elder Dempster Shipping Line and sailed to West Africa. On retiring he enjoyed sitting outside his local library, where he would tell tales of his life at sea. Everyone in Garston knew "Captain Watson".
