Captain John Cummins

Dad’s maternal family were from Whitby and he grew up between Middlesbrough and Whitby. Joining the Merchant Navy at 15 during WW2, he studied hard and, over the years, obtained his mates’ tickets and eventually became a captain. Dad met Jean, an Australian lass in Sydney. They were based in Whitby for a while, but moved to Sydney. He made the move to Harbour Pilot, with qualifications for 4 harbours. John and Jean brought up 3 daughters and later spent their long retirement in Northern NSW.
