William Hutchings (Bill) joined the navy aged 19 in 1944 and served in the Patrol Service. He was the telegraphist on a minesweeper patrolling the North Sea and destroying mines laid by the Germans. As such he was very much aware of the hazards of being on the sea. Bill passed away in 2008 but as his wife and best friend me and my daughter know he would have been glad to support the brave volunteers of the RNLI. We visited Whitby some years ago and have very happy memories of the town.
