Skipper Ronnie 'Peko' Balls
1901-1966 Ronald Balls Much loved and missed granddad.
Ronnie came from a family of herring fishermen and first went to sea at 17. At the age of 22, he took command of his father's boat Togo. In the late 1930's he had his own boat, the Violet and Rose, (YH757) he pioneered echo sounding, he was awarded the MBE in 1950. He was in “Singing the Fishing” produced by Charles Parker, accompanied by folk songs of Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. It won the Italia Prize for best Radio Feature.
