My lovely dad survived the little known tragic sinking of RMS Lancastria on 17.6.1940 when up to 5000 lost their lives. An Eastender he was a non swimmer but spent 7 hours clinging to wreckage in the Bay of Biscay before being rescued by a a French fishing boat and taken back to St Nazaire. From there he was amongst a small band of survivors who somehow ‘acquired’ a small boat and sailed back across the Channel, landing at Falmouth. This is the best tribute to him, his rescuers and comrades.
