George H Hatfield (RN)
My uncle George, whom I have never met because I was born much later, served
in the Royal Navy on the small ship Stella Copella during the dreadful Arctic
Convoys of the Second World War. Sadly his ship was lost at sea with all hands in
March 1942 (possibly torpedoed by the infamous Bismarck) just a few days before
his 22nd birthday. My aunts used to say that I reminded them of him, I hope in
good way. I can't imagine that fateful day when those poor men all perished in
that freezing cold water.
